As an X3 user both live and in the studio, the HD baffled me at first (I've had it one day as of this writing). Factory settings were just weird (ring modulators, synth octaves...) and only a few usable. It eventually hit me that you MUST program it to get usable setups. Think of it more like an amp with devices in a pre/post amplifier chain than you would with an XT or X3 and everything clicks. I have a Route 66 (compressor/distortion), Boss DD-20 (GigaDelay) and a short board around the X3 to get multiple distortions/delays. No more with the HD. Once I finally "got" the HD, I set up a volume pedal, noise gate, compressor, 2 distortions before the amplifier and 2 delays+reverb post amplifier. Wow - you can't do that with the X3... It sounds great, though it's not immediately obvious whether it completely delivers on the hype about better amp modeling - I need to spend more time comparing like models to the X3 before drawing conclusions. What I like 1. All in one (like the X3 live) means less cable mess and less gear to own. 2. No more direct boxes. 3. Configurable effects chain (this is a HUGE improvement) 4. Fewer, more selective amp models that cover the waterfront for 99.9% of us. 5. A wider variety of devices to choose from. 6. An effects loop (configurable location in the chain) in case you want to keep some of your most prized stomp boxes. This is great as I used to put the DD-20 after the X3 but had to dial back the X3 volume so as not to overdrive the DD20. No longer an issue with the HD. Caveats 1. The tap tempo is physically closer to the expression pedal than with the short board, so I found myself shutting the volume off when attempting to tap. My size 10 makes it difficult. There's no way to hit the button with the center of the foot, you have to move to the right, which then risks hitting the adjacent button on that side. :-( 2. If you configure an enabled effects loop, make sure you have something connected to pass the signal. The HD will not bypass it automatically, thus shutting off the signal. Not a flaw, just something to be aware of... 3. Firmware is evolving. I downloaded FW last night (Nov 10) and the better tuner (more precise display) passed the signal when tuning. I'm sure they'll fix that. 4. No bass amps. I will MISS this as I use the X3 in the studio and it has some great bass amp emulations. Hey Line6 - any chance of updates with bass amps in the near future? :-) 5. Dual tone is different. With the X3 you literally can get to different amp outputs in the left and right output. It doesn't appear so with the HD, though I haven't gone to the mat on that one. 6. Assignable buttons. The XT/X3 have a fixed relationship of button to function. The HD will assign by default, but better to take matters into your own hands and assign consistent locations for functions. Bottom Line If you own an X3 live, HD probably doesn't make sense (unless, upon further comparison, I discover that the amp emulations are stunningly better). If you have an X3 in the studio with the external devices you need, the HD may not buy you much. XT? I'd consider upgrading for the improved sound. If you play live with an standard XT or X3, the HD is a BIG improvement.
